Nathan walked into the hallway. He looked between them. Then blinked. "...Am I interrupting something?" Both answered instantly. "Yes." "No." They looked at each other. Nathan decided not to ask. "Sir..." His expression became serious again. "We've identified where the second SUV stopped after leaving here." Killian's attention shifted immediately. "Where?" "An abandoned warehouse near the harbor." "How recent?" "Less than twelve hours ago." Killian nodded once. "We're going." Aubrey's eyes widened.

I needed this and I was ready to stop living in fear that Ryker would find me. As we approached the top of the mountain, the beautiful ski resort came into sight. We had booked one of the small cabins on the outside of the Aspen resort. We pulled up in front of the resort and Paxton ran in to check us in and get the keys. When he came back out we drove over to the cabins. Ours was the last one and very private. Some stairs lead down to the cabin’s front door. It was an amazing place. We all grabbed our luggage and headed down the stairs and into the cabin. The inside was so cozy and comfy looking. The air is crisp, carrying the earthy scent of pine needles and damp moss, grounding anyone who steps into this natural haven. The cabins are rustic but charming, constructed from weathered wood that blends seamlessly with the surrounding forest. Each cabin is positioned with just enough distance between them to offer privacy, yet close enough to foster a sense of community among the couples. The cabins are adorned with large windows that invite the sunlight to pour in during the day, casting warm, dappled patterns across the wooden floors. By nightfall, Raverine and I were done making sure the cabin was safe from ambush. Even with cyberattacks from our devices, Raverine always tries to close all the loopholes he could possibly close. It was as if Raverine moved his investigation room in this cabin within a few hours. If you look at the cabin from afar outside, the cabin doesn’t look occupied since the lights weren’t able to illuminate past the dimmed windows and doors. It was just a haunted cabin like when we came here.

I do not take it off. The new safe house is a cabin at the end of a logging road, surrounded by pines so thick the sky disappears. It is smaller than the last one, older, the wood grey and weathered. Both accepted the others’ flaws and habits. I spotted a tablet in the glob compartment. The press of a button and the lock screen appeared. I entered Ryder’s password and then the password for the security system for the cabin. The footage of the cabin came into view. The gate. The driveway. The visible truck. I scanned the categories and selected the camera for ‘The Den’. Ryder’s weird name for the pheromone insulated rooms they used for their ruts.

He gave me a curt nod. "Follow me" Officer Jade said and turned the other way. I looked up at Ethan. He nodded at me and weaved his fingers through mine. We made our way through the forest with two of the officers trailing behind us. After about half an hour of trek, there it was! The cabin was made up of bamboo, looking exactly the way I imagined it would be. There were two windows on either side of the door, to my surprise there was a cupola on the cabin’s roof. The cabin was surrounded by trees on all the sides, which looked like the ones we come across in movies. It almost looked like, they were herding us in. She nodded, and a moment later, I walked into the cabin. It was adequately furnished with Adirondack furniture, much more accommodating than the outside of the cabin promised. I quickly opened the windows to air out the cabin as I walked through the small living room to the kitchen, then opened the cupboards. Good. It was well stocked. I kept it that way just in case. “I trust you.” The cabin appeared suddenly—a small, weathered structure tucked between pines, almost invisible from the path. Fabian parked behind it, hidden by branches, then grabbed their bags. They moved fast, scanning the trees for any sign of trouble. Once inside, he bolted the heavy door and checked every window. The second the latch clicked, Fabian’s control snapped.

Karin said, frowning. “No, I’m fine. Just tired, that’s all,” I said quickly. They exchanged a look but nodded. “The cabin’s just around the corner. Want me to carry you?” Gem asked. I shook my head. “I’m good.” … He lied. Again. There was no cabin around any corner. But eventually, after I nearly passed out, Gem ended up carrying me the rest of the way. And wow,when we got there, it was so worth it. The cabin was absolutely beautiful. It was made of dark brown wood, the smell of cedar welcoming is home. The roof was covered in leafy vines, and colorful flowers climbed up the sides like they’d always belonged there.
