There was a muted roar of approval among the coven, as Tyler, ashamed, got up and limped off the battlefield. “Who will stand and fight her?” Aiden called out. There was a momentary silence among the group. No one seemed to want to. Finally, a voice called out. “I will!” Caitlin looked over, and was surprised to see who it was. Cain. Except now, he had a shaved head, and looked much meaner and larger than she had remembered. If he remembered Caitlin at all, it clearly was not with joy. He had a meanness, a coldness in his eyes, that she hadn’t remembered. He wore a cut-off version of their uniform, and his muscles were bulging through skin. He looked like a hardened warrior.

The relief on his face made my stomach twist. “You look exhausted,” he said as I sat down next to him. “I am.” I didn’t bother lying. “Between my father getting worse, another traitor in the house, and Greco hitting us every chance they get… I feel like I’m drowning most days.” Cain nodded like he understood. We sat in silence for a minute, the kind that wasn’t awkward anymore. Just heavy. Real. “He’s planning something big,” Cain said eventually. “Adrian. He won’t tell me the details but I heard him on the phone yesterday. He kept saying your name. Said he’s going to make you pay for taking everything. He sounded… broken. But dangerous.”

The bond with the pack members and the urgency of the situation drowned out my deceit. He moved away from me, and said, “We can't risk leaving them unchecked. The rogues need to be stopped. Now!” Ignoring my attempts to sway him, Cain called upon the warriors, his voice commanding and unwavering. “Warriors, assemble! The guy flinched back in fear. His mind recalled the lost battle. And suddenly he realized where he was and how he ended up there. "S...Silvia?" The man tried and pretended to be unaware but Hunter wasn't having it.
