The one that got away. The phone in the office rang. I was left alone in the Alpha’s office as usual. Alana took no interest in the paperwork. At least she wasn’t bad on the battlefield and was superb in bed. “Hello?” I answered the call. Only formal calls reached the landline. “Are you Alpha Chad?” I raised an eyebrow. Whoever spoke on the other end sounded as though he was using a voice changer. “Yes,” I said, not knowing what to expect. “I heard you want Maya.”

This was going to work by force or by force. I took out my phone and dialed that one number that would make things right and would never ignore me. My heart was beating so fast against my chest, both from excitement and from fear. One ring and I could hear the hum from the other end. “Hello, Alpha,” I greeted, adjusting my voice automatically to the trained sweet future Luna. I instinctively straightened up. “Hello, Lara,” Alpha Blackthorn's voice from the other end resonated in my phone, sending some kind of chilling, comforting pride through my veins.

I walk into my office and answer the phone after shutting the door behind me. "Hello?" I ask when I see an unknown number on the display of the phone. We still have a landline phone and we only use it to get in contact with other Alpha's. All the numbers of the Alpha's are registered on the phone. So when someone calls the name pops up on the display and I know exactly who is calling. Except for this time, there is no name it just says "Unknown number" "Hello Axel," The voice says on the other line and I recognize the voice immediately.

I dial the number that I got from the Tech Team and when someone answers I ask for Alpha Christer. “Who’s calling?” “Alpha Quirin.” “One moment please,” the person says, and I wait. While I wait, I wink at my daughters whose attention is completely focused on me. “This is Alpha Christer.” “Alpha Christer, my name is Alpha Quirin.”

“The Alpha is dead.” The book in my hand dropped to the floor.
