Several of the other wives and girlfriends came over to offer help, but Callie wanted nothing to do with any of them. Not once during the hour that passed did Callie beg for cheap toys. Or sugar-laden snacks. Nor did she demand to know where her mother was. Or if her father was all right. Or why they couldn’t leave. She just curled into Channing and clung to her like a scared monkey. “Channing!” She spun around to see Colby limping down the bleacher stairs. “Colby? What are you doing here?” “Mary Morgan sent me.” Channing couldn’t read in his eyes whether it was good or bad news.

" My heart felt heavy. What was he talking about? Had he been reborn, just like me? Suddenly, a weak voice came from behind. Sheila Baker entered, her eyes red and teary. She whispered between sobs, "Mr. Lewis!" Elliot saw her and quickly moved away from me to rush over to her side. "Shouldn't you be resting? Why are you here?" Sheila looked up, her eyes brimming with tears. "Mr. Carter was worried about Ms. Carter going out alone while she's pregnant. He sent me to find her…!"

“Callie.” A short, balding man in a tight suit stepped into view. “Mr. Dan,” she said, her voice trembling now…not with fear, but fury. “You too? After all Millie did for this agency? For you? You owe her your damn career!” “Callie…” She didn’t let him finish. “You owe her your life!” And then she was gone, tears running down her cheeks. We were both being followed now; cameras in our faces, gossipers whispering just loud enough to be heard.

I felt a little dread creep through me as my eyes hovered over the heading. I flipped to the tab marked RIVERA, CALLIE — INTERNAL STRATEGY NOTES. The photo at the top was a basic headshot—probably pulled from the bakery’s official website or a business license. She looked the same. Curly brown hair pulled back into a ponytail and that soft smile she usually reserved for pets and babies. Her name read CALLIE RIVERA (FKA CALLIE EVANS). Beneath this, a few lines were underlined in red: Current Residence: 742 East Willow Drive

"I'm assuming you're not the chef." "God, no. I’m the man who makes sure the King looks like a King," he said, reaching out to flick a stray hair from my shoulder with a gloved hand. "And apparently, I’m the man who has to turn you into a Goddess of War in the next three hours. He called me at 4:00 AM, sounding... different. Now I see why." Alec runs out along with them and Avery pushes past me to go to Hadley. She cannot hear us anymore, she pulled her legs up against her chest, clenching her ears with her hands and begging for something to stop. No matter how carefully I focus my senses I could not hear anything. I want to go to her but I don’t know if I would calm her or scare her more. “Rogues!” Julian calls out over the link, he was part of border patrol for the night. “We are nearly there, hold them off.” Alec shouts though the link. My head whips back to Hadley. She knew. How did she know? My mind circles the bad before reason finds me again.
