Once she got an idea, she had to see it through. It was unclear who she had inherited this trait from. Catherine picked up a blank sheet of paper and a pencil, glancing helplessly at the man beside her, who was smirking. He really knew how to give her extra work.

The proportions were wrong, and the perspective worse. It was meant to be two people. I think. The first figure stood tall, cartoonishly wide shoulders, a sharp smile stretching across its crooked face. She’d drawn actual horns on the head like some devil from a child’s storybook. Beside it, she’d written, Mr. Evil Boss. And below him, on her knees as if begging for her life, was another figure. She’d scribbled beside it, me. I tilted my head. It looked like she’d gotten bored while waiting that day.

I looked over it again and again as I hoped Chris would love it. It is a realistic drawing of him in black and white. No color pencil was used. He is a suit with his arms folded on each other. He looked so manly with his expressionless face standing there. I made the drawing to his stomach and stopped it there, not drawing further down. It looks like a portrait. I wish I could frame it out before he comes back from work but I won't even be going out today. I glanced up at the time and it was up to an hour before he arrives from work.

He drew nine figures first. The same nine. All of them. Then he drew a tenth. Small. In the space below the seventh. He gave it curly hair because Ada's curls deserved to be there from the beginning. He looked at the name in the seventh figure's space.

The way Kara showed off her drawing to the screen was like someone presenting a priceless gift. “Mommy, look! There’s a big person and a small person. It’s you and me!” Tina looked at the big and small stick figures that were holding hands and wearing skirts. They looked close. Only, there was a scribble of black to the side. Curious, she asked, “What’s this black thing over there?” “Oh, that’s Daddy!” Stunned, Tina asked, “What…?” “I only drew you and me, but the teacher said to draw a father. Since Daddy died ages ago, I drew a huge coffin!”
