Natalie stared across the dunes—empty and vast. “We’ve cut the snake’s head off twice now,” Cassandra said. “How many heads does it have?”

It had to be. She kept moving, wiping sweat from her forehead, when the low rumble started outside. At first she thought more ambulances. Then the big white trucks rolled into the bay, clean and heavy, their sides marked in bold blue: AELION INDUSTRIES. Relief swept through the department like a breeze. The logistics coordinator was already out there waving them in, voice cracking with gratitude. “They’ve got emergency respiratory support systems,” he called. “Donated. Fully operational. They can start setting up now.”
