And that made Cassandra Cavanaugh Williams my best friend since diapers. Cassie has blonde hair and blue eyes, and I'm taller than her by about three inches. We were so close back in our primary days, and when we graduated, they moved to Ontario, Canada. But once in a while, she visits me, or I visit her. And it has been almost a year since we spent time together. But we always call each other, especially if there is big news about our lives. Just like when she called me last week and told me that she already has her first boyfriend, and that made me tell her about Blair on our pretty savage encounter at my bookstore.

Pops I met Cassie Roberts, the daughter of my previous beta’s son James, when I visited their house four years ago, and I must say she was the moon goddess herself, so angelic, so innocent, and at peace. The memory of that first encounter was vivid in my mind. Cassie had a radiant presence that lit up the room. Her soft, golden hair framed a face that seemed untouched by the world's harshness. Her eyes, clear and bright, held a sense of wonder and kindness that was rare in our brutal world. There was an ethereal quality about her, a serenity that was both captivating and soothing.

Cassie probed as I rifled through my wardrobe for whatever remaining clothes had made the trip to London. “I don’t know. He keeps sending me mixed messages. He definitely enjoys the sex, but I’m not sure if he still sees me as just a possession. I don’t know,” I replied honestly. Cassie slipped into a floral skirt and long sleeved top, adding the extra cute factor with a pair of high heels I wouldn’t dream of wearing. In comparison to my go-to jeans and t-shirt, she was Malibu Barbie. A touch of makeup and a flick of her hair, and she looked ready to conquer the world. While I looked like I had spent the day doing housework.

But put me in a cafeteria full of chatting employees, and suddenly I forgot how chairs worked. I grabbed a tray, chose food I barely looked at, and carried it to an empty corner table. Fine, I told myself. Observe first. Socialize later. Maybe tomorrow. I had barely taken two bites when a cheerful voice appeared beside me. “Is this seat taken?” I looked up. Cassie stood there, holding a tray overloaded with fries and juice. Today she wore a bright yellow cardigan over a white top, the colour making her copper-red hair glow. Freckles dusted across her shoulders and collarbone like scattered paint. She looked like sunshine made human.

She got a few pieces of paper that didn’t belong to any book and showed him what she saw. ‘The Council’s crimes’; ‘First dynasty of Ascended members’; ‘Bloody Peace: a review on the most atrocious acts of the Council’ Those were just some of the titles, but the table was still stacked with books they were yet to reach. Lady Cassie came back with a tray with three teacups and a teapot and smiled at them gently. “Oh, how wonderful, you chose my favorite!” “Cassie, what is the meaning of this? How did you know?”

--- Cassie’s Coffee & Ink was nestled between a pawn shop and a laundromat, the door jingling with a soft chime as Sarah stepped inside. She wore jeans and a loose flannel Jax had left at the cabin — the sleeves rolled up, her hair in a messy ponytail. She hadn’t worn makeup in weeks. And yet, for the first time, she didn’t feel like she was hiding. Cassie was tall, covered in tattoos, with a sharp jaw and sharper eyeliner. “You’re early,” she said, offering a crooked smile. “I’m nervous.” “You’ll do fine. People like broken girls. Makes them feel less alone.”

I understood their apprehension, despite my disappointment. Though my physical scars had healed, the emotional wounds remained. I struggled with nightmares and insomnia whenever my sister was not nearby. Everything changed when I met Cassie. She is an extraordinary woman—a stranger, a single mother, and a friend of my sister’s. Yet, I felt an immediate and profound connection with her, as though we had known each other forever. Cassie became my anchor, offering safety, peace of mind, and perhaps even happiness. She was the one who finally helped me find the peace I had been desperately seeking.

"Yes, she's eager to see us. She wants to help, too." "Cane sure has a lot of enemies, no?" She laughed. "He does." He kissed Cassie’s temple. "Ready to go global, Miss Stone?" Cassie took a deep breath of the cold air. She thought about everything she had gone through at the hand of the man who had locked her in a basement, all in a bid to control her. "I’m ready." Cassie said. She climbed the jet. The jet was an absolute marvel, but that was not what she was here for. Cassie sat down, buckled her seatbelt, and opened her laptop immediately.

CASSIE THREE MONTHS LATER "Cas, your mum's calling again," Jeanne called out to me. "Damn it," I hurried into our shared office and grabbed my phone, "Hey mum." "I've been calling you all day," my mother grumbled, "The reason you have a phone is for communication darling. If you aren't going to pick your calls, we may as well start sending you post letters." "Did you need something or is dad not around for you to nag?" I teased.
