The black one stayed unflinching while one of the others—a scrappy gray tabby—hissed again and took a step forward.
‘I don’t have time for this,’ I grumbled, frustrated, though I knew the words were lost on them. ‘How did Irving manage to make this trip from Bloodmoon to Sarael’s house undetected?’
I darted forward, a blur of motion meant to startle them, and it worked. The tabby jumped back, and the black one leaped from the fence, disappearing into the dark. The third cat, a calico, let out a startled yowl and bolted into the safety of a nearby hedge.
