The cabin welcomed them the moment the door shut. It smelled faintly of cedar and smoke, the scent of the woods clinging to the beams and rugs, layered with something softer—herbs from the bundle hanging by the window, lavender and sage that Cheyenne had insisted on weeks ago. The hearth crackled lazily, flames licking low at the logs, painting everything in shades of copper and honey.

“He tend to worry in times like this but he’ll be back soon. You don’t have to worry.” Elias nodded to make the two at ease. However, suddenly, Alari went to his direction and dragged him towards the foreign place. They used the dense forest at the back which made Elias wondered where they were going. “Alari, where are we off to? Aunt Helga is going to be mad if we go too far,” he lectured the kid, but Alari ignored her. “I am not familiar here yet.” Until the path they’re walking becomes more clearer and clearer. The woods seemed like columns inside the forest that’s beautifully stood up on its roots. Each woods was tied up a small bagon stem with different flowers covering it.

Bonus Chapter 21 – Morning After the Cabin Eli POV Morning light slipped through the cabin’s wooden shutters in pale, dusty beams, blending with the last glowing embers in the hearth and the steady golden shimmer of the fairy lights we’d strung along the ceiling beams, around the headboard, and in soft loops over the windows. The room smelled of pine resin, lingering woodsmoke from last night’s fire, and the faint sweet vanilla of the candle we’d let burn itself out to a waxy stub on the nightstand. Outside, snow continued to fall in thick, silent flakes, muffling the world into perfect stillness.

It reminded me of warm afternoons on the edge of the forest, lying beside my mother while she read. Next came apple blossom—delicate, faint, but fresh. The kind of scent you only noticed when the wind shifted. The kind you didn’t expect to linger but it somehow did. I plucked a few of those, adding them to my bowl. And lastly, cedar. Bark peeling from a low limb, the wood underneath rough and fragrant. I scraped off a small strip and inhaled—earthy, clean, sharp. Like home. Like safety. Ruby stirred, soft and low. Powerful enough for a Luna, she whispered.

It was unmistakable. Mountain Ashwood. The only type of wood that could put an elder Vampire to sleep. But this was just a piece of it. Where was the rest? And more importantly, where was the elder Vampire that this wood had been used on?

The scent I caught here before was now so strong that it hit my nostrils hard, and I could immediately tell where the owner was. It’s the scent of cedarwood. Distinctive and evocative. Its warm and woody aroma has subtle undertones of earthiness. A deep, rich fragrance of freshly cut cedar wood is reminiscent of a dense forest or a cozy log cabin. Grounding and calming, creating a sense of comfort and serenity within me. It carries a subtle sweetness, resembling both the resinous quality of the wood and a delicate smokiness.
