Turning the key into ignition for the third time, she moaned in complaint as the engine still made the same choking sound before dying out yet again. "Oh you've got to be kidding me!" She cried, letting out a whine before she got out of the car and went to pop up the hood. This was bad. She only had twenty more minutes before her shift would start yet the damned old thing before her called a car wouldn't start for the sake of her. She took a clueless look under the hood, noticing that indeed there was a thin whisp of smoke coming out from between the tangled mess of cables, little hoses and blocks of metal and plastic.

“We have plenty of fuel.” The engine sputtered again, then died completely. We coasted to a stop in the middle of the overgrown track. Fenris turned the key. Nothing. Not even a click. “Shit.” He popped the hood and got out. I followed, watching as he examined the engine. Everything looked fine—no obvious damage, no leaks. “Try starting it again,” Fenris said. I climbed back in and turned the key. Nothing. The SUV was completely dead. “The battery’s fine. The fuel line’s clear. I don’t understand.” Fenris slammed the hood closed in frustration. “It just died.”

When I finished, I rose up and kick-started the ignition. It rumbled to life, but just before I could scream in victory, it made silly noises with wire sparks. My smile faded and I immediately crouched back down. I didn't want to look at Varce’s face but when I did, he was even angrier than he was initially. Damn. I checked for any issues over and over, fixed the minor ones and finally started the engine again. It worked. It fucking worked. No weird noises.

“Just a little bit longer. Hang in there for me.” It groans, like it can hear me and it’s tired, and I can’t even be surprised when a few minutes later, the overheating light comes on. I ease the car to the side of the road, and kill the engine, letting it rest for a little bit before I crank it back up. It tries to turn over, but just ends up grinding a bit, refusing to start. “No! Don’t do this to me, we’re so close. Come on. Come on, you can do it.”

I started the car, but instead of starting it, the engine just choked a few times and died. This is not happening… I tried two more times, but the result was the same. My heart nearly stopped. The engine sputtered. For a moment, it sounded like it was about to come alive. Hope surged through me. “Yes! Yes!” But then, the engine coughed, and died. “No!” I screamed. My hands shook violently as I tried again. Behind me— BANG! Another hit.

I shift back my chair, grab my backpack, and storm out of the house. Outside, the sun is already overhead in the sky, and it's blazing hot, which is weird for the current weather in New Hampshire. I get into my car and put on my seatbelt. After making sure the gear is in neutral, I press the push start button. The silent hum that always comes on after I do this doesn’t come on. Something is wrong. I try again. Same outcome. F*ck.

Rainwater drips from the ends of my hair, slides down my neck, and disappears beneath my jacket as the motorcycle limps through the muddy trail with a sound that can only be described as mechanical suffering. Behind me, Cassian's bike coughs once, then dies. Completely. I look over my shoulder just in time to see him come to a stop. The silence that follows is louder than any engine.
