Wakely turned away from the screen and faced Cora completely. “I’m to believe that a bunch of recently deceased people are coming back as zombies, and they don’t give a reason why. I want the back story dammit. I want to know if someone fucked up at a lab and accidentally spilled some sort of chemical that raised them. “That I could believe. A plague.” He met her gaze, impassive, as if his words carried no weight on his conscience but were undeniable truths. “A plague that slowly poisons everything around it, even when it thinks it’s harmless. And the worst part is, you don’t even realize it. You destroy relationships, sow discord, and create chaos, all with that victimized air, as if the world is always against you.” Vittoria’s lips parted and closed several times, as if she were desperately searching for a response, any retort to counter the blow. But nothing came.

He touched the orb again, prepared for whatever knowledge might await him, whatever burden he might be forced to bear. The orb glowed brighter, its light intensifying, filling the chamber with an almost blinding radiance. He closed his eyes, bracing himself for another onslaught of information, another glimpse into the lost city of Eldoria and the cataclysmic event that had changed the world forever. This time, however, the information came slowly, deliberately, revealing secrets and mysteries, one at a time. He learned of hidden chambers, of secret passages, of technological marvels buried deep within the earth.

The ceiling cracked and black matter rained down in clumps. One of the lanterns we'd brought down shattered, and the light dropped by half. I looked at the Orb in my arm. The dark currents inside were moving faster now, agitated, responding to the energy pouring through the tear. I looked at the anchor.
