Summer The athletic lounge on the second floor of the sports complex was usually a sanctuary of high-end leather chairs, flat-screen monitors displaying sports networks, and a quiet space for varsity athletes to escape the academic grind. At noon, it was nearly empty, save for a few underclassmen studying playbook prints. Chloe slammed her hand down on the mahogany coffee table right in front of Jaxson, the sharp crack of her palm hitting the wood echoing loudly off the trophy cases. Jaxson didn't even flinch.

The finality in his tone landed like a slammed door. For a second anger flared within me. I wanted to snap, ‘Stop treating me like an outsider, stop acting like a child.’ Instead I took a slow breath, forcing a casual shrug. “I'm sorry. People walk in and instantly feel like readers.”

Each shelf was marked with the type of book it contained. "Kayla should take magic and spells," I said, guiding her to the correct section. She ran her finger down the dusty spines, pausing at a heavy book titled "The History of Elementals." She pulled the massive cream leather book off the shelf and settled in the corner, crossing her legs and resting the book on her lap. She turned the yellowed pages, running her finger over the black embossed words.

Sam ushered me towards the exit. The visitors lounge was indeed breathtaking. I was seated in a relaxing chair and offered varieties of pastries. For entertainment a shelve of books was put in place. I had options to read from. Sam showed me all that I needed before taking his leave. I got a novel that seemed like it would be a great companion and I wasn’t wrong. For the first time in a long while, I was able to relax with my mind not being preoccupied by thoughts that are unnecessary. The novel had me so glued, I didn’t know I had spent such a long time in the lounge until Lena poked her head in.
