Xavier snorted, quiet, but unmistakably amused despite himself. Lorenzo turned his head, and his eyes, usually sharp, calculating, cold, softened. When I read her message, I felt an odd sense of disbelief. In such a short time, everything had come to an end. Xavier would never return to the life he was proud of.
