Oh, okay.” I swipe to the next session, “We can do Christmas Pop too——Justin Bieber’s Mistletoe, Robbie Williams’s Merry Kissmas, oh wow there’s even Lil Nas X’s HOLIDAY.” He’ll totally nail his entrance with these songs. Now, it was paid off but sitting empty. Putting the unpleasantness out of her mind, Memory switched on the Christmas music and hummed along to “Silent Night” as she checked the stock room to make sure she had the candy cane ornaments ready to ship. She loved music but never sang and only hummed if no one else was around to hear her chronically off-tune voice.

“Shall we go get decorations today?” James sighs. “I’m not going to change your mind, am I?” “Exactly.” I smile and plant another kiss on his cheek. Then I get out of bed and rummage through the closet for clean clothes to wear. There’s no way I’m going out in this scruffy red sweater with a drunken Santa on it. I still have some dignity. Kind of. James and I get ready and hop in the car. While he drives, I turn on the Christmas playlist. We sing at the top of our lungs until we park, and we’re still humming as we finish belting out All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey.
