Chapter — The Mothers of the Castle Aella POV Apparently, the castle could sense urgency. And desperation. Because the moment the thought fully formed in my mind—we need help, we need answers, we need to be ready—the library reacted. Books began moving. At first it was only one shelf. Then another. Then an entire section of the room shifted with elegant precision. Volumes slid free on their own, scrolls unrolled in midair, ladders glided across rails, and stacks of books floated from distant corners toward me like determined birds.

I pushed open the library door, and I saw Ramona sitting by the window, and I felt something in my chest ease, just a little. The library was quiet, and the fire was burning low, and the shadows were long and dark. Ramona was sitting in her usual chair by the window, with a book open in her lap, but her old brown eyes were not moving across the pages. She was staring out at the snow. The snow was falling fast and thick, blanketing the courtyard in white. I watched it for a moment, and I thought about the first time I had seen snow like this, which was the day I arrived at the castle in chains. I had been so afraid then.

136 Two hours later, Vera was standing in the middle of the city and gazing at the Royal Castle, her home. It was sitting atop raised lands like you see in Disney Movies— towering over the entire city like a giant stony monster. There were houses lining below it. All covered in snow. The air was sharp and cold, and the floors beneath my boots were uniformly blanketed with snow. The entire world around me had transformed into a winter wonderland—so, this is the North. The castle's majestic turrets stood tall, resembling silent sentinels against the canvas of the pristine, snow-covered landscape.

The downtown area was similar to a lot of the towns Dak had visited recently, looking for the perfect place to start his new endeavor, but there was something slightly different about Christmas Falls, something special he couldn’t quite put his finger on. The Christmas decorations hanging from the lamp posts and strung around the trees were the same white lights, red bows, garland, and cartoony characters as everywhere else, seasonal flowers blooming from the flower beds while banners announced where he was and that he was welcome there, but an excitement seemed to hang in the air that he could only describe as a certain kind of Christmas magic he couldn’t ever remember encountering before.

With a sigh, I slip my feet into slippers and creep through the castle again, one of the spirits–the man, I think–lighting the way with each sconce that flares to life. It’s wide at the base and funnels with each level, each subsequent floor spiraling into one of the spires of the castle and growing darker and darker with the climb. Small, arched windows let in moonlight when I move into the center of the main floor, but the lights are already on and dimmed, probably because the spirits realized I was coming this way and took care of that for me.
