, Uncle Cameron took a long pause. I remember it was the Christmas holidays. All my relatives and cousins had come to our house for the Thanksgiving dinner. One of my uncles, uncle Cameron was very fond of telling horror stories to us. I was seven and my cousins a year or two younger and older. Me, Julie, Michelle, Sammy and Hailey had sat around on the rug in our PJ's listening to uncle Cameron's stories. She found it funny to tell me horror stories before bed. I remembered once returning the favor. I told her about Terry the ghost, a boy who’d died in an accident on the street across from our house. Terry’s ghost wandered our neighbor’s house where his family had once lived. Mom hadn’t slept alone for weeks after that, and she never told me another horror story. My mom was like me in some ways—she was terrified of the paranormal, or anything religious. That’s why her engagement to Bill had been such a shock. But even Mom had gotten braver, so why couldn’t I?

Christian nodded yes and I grabbed and tickled him until he couldn’t laugh anymore. “Okay let’s see what this story is about.” I took the book and read to him while he lay next to Adara and held her hand. His eyes closed at the fourth paragraph and I read two more to make sure he was sleeping. We kissed him goodnight on his forehead and left the night light on. Some nights he was afraid of the dark and other nights it didn’t bother him at all. I wasn’t worried. It was normal for kids to be afraid of the dark. Especially if they saw a dead woman in it talking to them.

He stared silently without a word, as if he didn't hear me. Then the indistinct chatter and footsteps behind me drew my attention. I looked back. Three tattered looking men stood across the alley. They reeked of alcohol and cigarettes. Their eyes swept over me, a creepy smile spreading across their faces. It felt as though they didn't notice the strange man. “Hey, beautiful…” one of them said as they stepped forward. “What are you doing here all alone, huh?” Another one said. “Do you need a place to sleep tonight, hmm? We can celebrate Christmas together,” The third one said as they approached me.

I hear voices before my brain puts together what’s happening. “Mommy said the scary man is trying to find us, and these will protect us.” Griffon says happily. “Yeah, and they’re pretty.” Heather adds. Dallas laughs, “That they are, pumpkin.”

She folded her arms against her chest. “It’s only dressed as a haunted house at Halloween,” Christian clarified. “Oh, good,” Meagan sighed. “But it’s one of the most haunted places in the world,” Christian continued, a devious twinkle in his eyes that made me shiver a little bit, and I wasn’t even there. “Oh, crap,” Meagan said, returning to her former disposition. “You hunt Vampires for a living, Meag,” Aurora reminded her. “How can you possibly be scared of ghosts?”

Oh and you know what? I just remembered, there’s a HUGE Christmas display in the city. They have music, hot chocolate, lights, all of it. I’d love to take you there. We could make it a date night,” I say, watching her reaction.
