When they heard this, it was only natural for their heads to feel numb. The stories were old-fashioned and not scary at all. The most important thing, though, was the atmosphere that the people themselves made. At this time, a sudden noise might just surprise the people who were there. Chris Gordon liked to tell his stories with very few tricks. As he talked, he felt compelled to use the light from his phone to shine on the lowest faces, giving them eerie shadows. He even added creepy laughter on purpose, and when the story reached its climax at the end, he suddenly roared out loud while making a dramatic gesture.

Just remember, if you don’t want things to go bump in the night, don’t tell anyone else about them. Even now the shadows in my room play havoc with my subconscious, so I turn the light on and sleep with one eye open. Maya's Pov I woke up to someone jumping on my bed. Again. "Merry Christmas! Get up, get up, get up!" Sophie was worse than a five-year-old on Christmas morning. She wore pajamas with reindeer on them and a Santa hat that kept sliding off her head. "What time is it?" I groaned. "Seven. Come on, we open presents at seven thirty. Family tradition. No exceptions." She bounced out of my room, leaving me alone with my messy hair and complete lack of holiday cheer at this ungodly hour.

Ten-year-old Bree chimed as Emma looked over her shoulder worriedly. “That’s nice, sweetie. Why don’t you tell me about that mermaid story again?” “I hate that story. Can I tell the one about the wolf?” Bran chimed in. “Wolf?” Patrick asked as Brinna looked out the window and saw another animal running alongside their vehicle. “Yeah, the one that eats the girl in the red hood.” “Mommy, I don’t like that story. It is scary.” Bree snuck at the rolling landscape and saw the scary animal with sharp teeth sneering at her, so she pretended to look forward and saw her parents exchange a look.

I cried out and stumbled backward, nearly falling. One of the men stood in front of me. Up close, he looked even scarier. Cold. I backed away slowly, my hands raised without thinking. “Please,” I whispered. “I don’t want any trouble, please.”
