Then she realized the sound was coming from her desk—where Ember, her flame spirit, hovered, glowing brighter than usual. The tiny fireball floated closer, his light pulsing like a heartbeat. “Ember?” she whispered, pushing herself upright. “What’s wrong?” The spirit didn’t answer in words. Instead, a thin, wavering voice curled into her mind—like whispers carried on smoke.

She had built a new identity for herself, one that didn't involve pack politics or ancient secrets. Her coworkers knew her as a quiet, efficient, and fiercely organized accountant, not as a werewolf on the run.

Leo asked. I thought about the fire that had broken through my binding, the ancient fury that had opened its eyes inside me and refused to be extinguished. I thought about Marcus, out there somewhere, still burning with whatever twisted rage drove him, and about how different that kind of fire was from what I wanted to build here. "Ember House," I said slowly, testing the words. "Because an ember isn't the destructive part of a fire. It's what's left after everything burns down — small, but still warm. Still alive. Still capable of starting something new if you're patient with it."

Ember mumbled to herself, “But I fucking need him still.” Ember stopped in front of her apartment door and opened it with her key. Once she got inside, Ember removed her top shirt, leaving her in her sports bra. Ember went to the other side of her bed and opened the curtains. The street of Pinephil city isn’t that appealing to tourists at all. But the lights at this night hour would give justice and beauty to the city at least. “A sparkling façade of the gruesome life here.” Ember scoffed and softly closed the curtain. She went to her desk and opened her computer. She was about to take a seat when someone knocked on her door.

Another one named Jeremy came in with a bright smile. He was a beautiful lad. He had orange hair, brown bright gazes…. Why does Landon have such beautiful people around him? Are they actually his friends? They seem like individuals from rich families and he seemed a lot happier around them. He came to me with a handshake. “Hi, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Jeremy.” I handshake him as well. “I’m Larisa. It’s nice to meet you too.” Everyone was so freaking nice to me. They all kept practicing for what I couldn’t clearly understand.

He laid his glasses down on the desk in front of him and rubbed his tired eyes. The crackling of flames could be heard as the city burned all around them. The blood curdling screams of the men in the streets where they died was enough to make the blood of the fiercest warrior run cold, but he was a man of empathy and it hurt him more than it did the others.

“She wouldn’t hurt Angelica, would she? I mean, she’s just a child. She can’t possibly understand everything that’s going on.” Ember didn’t answer my question right away. She held out her hand and blew softly into her palm. A small ball of flame sputtered to life, illuminating where we stood in the darkness. The light flickered and waned, dancing as its casted shadows along Ember’s high cheekbones and plump lips.

“So, Miss Sleuth, I understand that you’ve had quite an adventure.” “Esmerelda,” I said, softly. “Call me Esmerelda.” He nodded. “Alright. Esmerelda, can you tell me a bit about what happened?” I hesitated going into detail with someone in the medical profession. It was such a crazy story. What if he thought me just that? What if he thought me crazy? Sure, he was a member of the society, but that didn’t mean that he’d been exposed to all that there is out there. What if his knowledge of the paranormal is more limited than that of Lance or Killian?
