She tasted the smoke before she saw the fire, and the heat rolled over them in waves strong enough to blister stone. The sky above had turned a violent shade of crimson, the Moon Gate fracturing in the heavens like glass being punched from the inside. Every sound around her was a chorus of chaos, wolves howling in fear and rage, steel striking steel, buildings collapsing, children crying, warriors shouting orders that vanished into the storm of war. ADRIEN A City on Fire The tension in the city was thick enough to cut with a knife. I could feel it in the air every time I stepped outside. The streets that had once buzzed with life were now filled with an ominous silence, interrupted only by the distant sounds of sirens and gunfire. Each day brought new reports of gang wars escalating, innocent lives caught in the crossfire. My heart sank further with each headline I read or news bulletin I heard. And give me everything.” I closed my eyes, leaning into her touch, the storm inside quieting just enough for me to think. She was right. She had always been right. The city wanted my fire, but I didn’t have to burn for it anymore. I could let it starve.

I faced the flames again, watching sparks leap into the sky. “Every strike weakens him. Every fire burns his reach shorter.
