Then she tiptoed outside, joined Mr Greyson in the car, and he drove off towards the location of Clara's body. As he drove, Mrs Greyson's chest started churning from the idea of actually possibly finding the decaying remains of her eighteen year old daughter, who until a while ago, had been the belle of the ball; the apple of her eyes. The cynosure at every event and in every room where people had eyes.

My parents gathered all the evidence and personally submitted it to the Werewolf Tribunal. At the same time, they formally severed their adoption of Clara and, based on everything written in the diary, charged her with orchestrating my abuse and indirectly causing my death. Cases like this were almost unheard of in the pack, so when the trial began, the entire pack showed up to watch. At first, Clara denied everything. She insisted the diary entries were nothing more than made-up fantasies and couldn't be used as evidence.

"I'll stay right here with her." She whispered. I took one last look at Clara’s pale face before heading out. I got into my car and sped toward the crime scene. Memories of my talk with Lucas earlier flashed through my mind, back to the moment I realized the killer was heading for Clara’s school. Flashback "That bastard is targeting teenage girls..." I whispered to myself, my hand crushing the paperwork. Something new caught my eye: a photo of the latest victim. Her school uniform... it was the same one Clara wore.

“Don’t give me excuses. Just find my girl.” I dropped into the chair, my chest heaving as I pulled up the feed from the 28th floor. The timestamp showed Clara walking into the bathroom. Then nothing. Ten minutes later the window was open and she was gone. No clear images of the intruders. Just shadows moving too fast, too professional.

Her brows knitted together. Sniff! A strange smell lingered in the air. It was faint. Yet unmistakable. Something wasn't right. Something smelled... burnt. Clara froze and very slowly, her eyes widened. "Wait..." She inhaled again. The smell hit her immediately and her heart nearly stopped. "Oh no." A thousand horrifying possibilities flashed through her mind. Electrical fire. Gas leak. Kitchen accident. The mansion burning down. Her children trapped upstairs. The panic arrived with lightning speed. "IS THE HOUSE ON FIRE?!"

I grab the keys. Aurora grabs the note. Sebastian turns toward the voices. Clara reaches into her coat and pulls out a key fob. Hits the button. Across the garage, a metal shutter starts rising. Good woman, Very good woman. “Go!” she says. We run toward the opening. Halfway there, Sebastian stops, not fully. Enough to turn back. “What now?” Aurora snaps. He looks at Clara. "Are you coming?” She almost smiles. “Not with your father’s enemies and your uncle’s men in the same room.” Fair, too fair.

She would not give them that satisfaction. She pushed herself to her feet, swaying unsteadily. She had to find her way back to Adrian. He was the only one she could trust now. The only one who could help her face whatever horror had been awakened in the well. Clara staggered through the forest, her strength nearly gone. The night stretched endlessly, every shadow a threat. At last she saw a faint glow ahead—a flicker of lantern light. Hope surged within her. She stumbled toward it, branches tearing at her clothes, until she broke into another clearing.
