They were abominations, their bodies broken and deformed, corrupted by whatever twisted magic had brought them to life. I slashed at another one of the beasts as it lunged, my claws tearing through its matted fur and into the sinewy flesh beneath. It screeched, a guttural sound that echoed through the night, but it didn’t fall. These creatures didn’t go down easy; they were resilient, driven by something primal and unnatural.

The ground beneath the lead beast had begun to tremble in a manner distinct from the trembling produced by its footfalls, a vibration that came from below rather than from the impact of weight on surface, and the beast itself slowed with the confused uncertainty of something that has been moving with complete confidence and has encountered for the first time a situation in which its confidence is not immediately justified. I backed away, ducking and rolling away at the right moment. I came up swinging again but my body disappointed me. I felt slow and sluggish, as if my body was fighting underwater. “C’mon,” I growled. “Get away from me!” As I struggled with those ones, a wet growl caught my growl from behind, then another. And another.

The dark magic coursing through them was palpable, and every fiber of my being screamed that this was a force unlike any we had ever faced. We surged forward as one. Our claws dug into the earth, propelling us forward at blinding speed. The Overlord and his mate met us head-on, their fused form barreling toward us like an unstoppable force of nature.
