"Winter break starts this week. I was thinking of bringing some friends home for a couple weeks. That cool?" Friends. Right. You wouldn’t understand even if you tried."

I barely manage to get the question past my lips. "No, nothing about it. The doctors are examining her- I already told you that." Cody shakes his head and glances at his phone. "I'll go get some coffee; I think the night's going to be pretty long. Want me to get you some, too?" He offers, probably to ease the tension. I flash him a smile and decline his offer. I can see Cody's inner struggle with himself. I know my best friend. He wants to approach me and tell me everything would be alright, but he knows I wouldn't believe his words if the doctors didn't say the same thing.
