Then its chest opened, panels shifting and sliding until I saw a black hole pulsing inside it, glowing faint red.
“Express its disappointment?” Hoodie Guy muttered near me. “Interesting.’”
The Game Master clapped its hands, the sound loud and final. “The song will end when the system decides it has had enough,” it said cheerfully. “Until then… dance.”
And just like that, the music began.
It wasn’t any song I recognized, it was something electronic and disorienting, full of deep beats that shook the floor.
I forced my body to move—awkward, jerky steps, my arms swaying stiffly. I felt ridiculous, but I didn’t care. I wasn’t about to find out what “disappointment” meant.
