Chapter 97: The Final Dash The roof gave way beneath them. Luca and Ethan crashed onto the lower terrace of the Ambassador’s Residence, a heavy, scraping impact that sent shards of glass and splinters of concrete tumbling into the manicured garden below. I tried to grasp anything, anything that could break my fall and not send me spiraling to my room down below. I closed my eyes as my body neared the ground, bracing for impact. I landed with a soft thud. Possibly the first thing that shocked me. I had landed on something, a mould of something...or more appropriately, someone.

My arms hold her tight against my body. “Milo?” I hear Leni’s desperate cry beyond the wind rushing past my ears. “It’s me, Sugar. Don’t let go.” The fall free fall lasts forever. Time feels like it doesn’t exist. It doesn’t even feel like my body exists anymore. Until we come to a sudden stop. The hardwood floor buckles and cracks beneath me when I land flat on my back. The impact knocks the wind out of me. Leni crushes me from the top, amplifying the effect. Her body is ice cold and limp in my arms.
