We tore through the roof of the house again and kept going. Thirty feet. Forty. The ground shrank beneath us. “No,” I said. I twisted in midair, wrenching our momentum around, and drove us both down. The impact was catastrophic. The earth buckled. Cassian’s body carved a crater into the ground. A student stood there, frozen in the wrong second of time. Cassian’s falling weight crushed him completely. Bones snapped in rapid succession, sharp and final, bursting like fireworks beneath the sound of the collision. I rose from the impact.

If I didn’t land properly, I was sure to break a bone or two. I realized this at the precise moment I was already committed.
