I dropped onto the bed and hugged the old bear tight. And I broke. Tears spilled fast, soaking into its dirty fur. My shoulders shook as sobs tore out of me. I tried to bite them back, but they came anyway, ugly and loud. I cried until I couldn’t breathe right. Until my head ached. Until I was too tired to keep it up. Then, just like that, I laughed. A bitter, broken laugh that made me sound like someone else. “Look at me,” I whispered, wiping my face with the back of my sleeve. “Crying like a child. Like that’s going to change anything.”

He glared at me. “A – Attempt what?” I asked with a dumb expression. Laughter bubbled up from inside me. “S – Sui - ” The laughter burst out, my entire body burning with pain as I laughed. “Is that the story?” Tears spilt from the corners of my eyes as I laughed. My laughter turned to sobs in a second.

Why was he acting as if it was a feat or something? Then Adrian burst off laughing, and it was not just a simple laugh. It was a full-blown heartfelt laughter where he had tears in his eyes from the laughing. Even though I didn't understand what he was laughing about, it was a sight I loved. I watched mesmerised until he stopped laughing. Even then, his sapphire eyes were twinkling with mirth. I didn't know if he was laughing at me, but even if he was, I didn't care. If it got him to laugh like this, he could make fun of me all day.

I swallowed, and just then, tears started to stream down my cheeks. What was wrong with me? Why was I crying? He had made such a funny joke, and I was supposed to still be laughing. Why did the laughter suddenly bring tears to my eyes? "Oh my, did I say something bad? I’m so sorry; I didn’t mean to hurt you, I promise." He tried explaining himself, and I chuckled slightly.

It was like someone punched me straight in the stomach. The laughter exploded even louder this time. It rolled through the hall, echoing against the walls like waves crashing down on me. It wasn’t just laughter—it was cruel, piercing, made to tear me apart. The kind of laugh people used when they wanted to crush you until you couldn’t breathe anymore. Adrian and Tricia’s laughs rose above everyone else’s, sharp and triumphant. I could see Tricia clutching her stomach as if it was the funniest thing she’d ever seen.

“W⁠hy a⁠re⁠ YOU crying?” She wiped her face drama‌tica‍lly. “Because everybody‌ el⁠s⁠e wants to‍ cry.‍” T⁠hat⁠ broke the‌ roo‌m. Laughter Real and loud laughter⁠. The kind mixed with tea‌rs. Liam stoo‌d first. Walked over.⁠ Pull‍ed No⁠ah into a⁠ h‍ug. Noah⁠ immedi⁠ately co⁠mpla‍ined.

I barely had time to wipe my face, barely had time to swallow down the wreckage of my sobs before I heard her. "Aww." That voice. Syrupy. Mocking. Drawn out like she was savoring it. My stomach twisted. I didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Didn’t breathe. Just curled in tighter. "You’re actually crying?" I squeezed my eyes shut. My breath hitched. Don’t react. Don’t react. Don’t react. But she laughed. Really laughed. Not a chuckle. Not a scoff. A full, delighted, sharp-edged, cruel fucking laugh.

Door’s unlocked so bring that mouth I miss so much. My breath slipped out of me in a soft, pathetic sound and I dropped the phone onto the blanket as if it burned me. My heart cracked so loudly I could almost hear it. And then… something strange happened. I started laughing. Who in their right mind would laugh right now? Oh, right. Me, apparently. “Oh my God,” I choked out, laughing harder. But tears started spilling down my face at the same fucking time. Talk about perfect timing. I probably sat like that for minutes — laughing and crying, crying and laughing — until the laughter faded and only the tears remained.

Caroline's eyes shimmered in the dim light, and she let out a quiet, breathy laugh, shaking her head as if she couldn’t believe this moment was real. My breath hitched, and I blinked rapidly to push back the sting of tears threatening to fall. I didn’t deserve someone like her, yet here she was, telling me she felt the same about me. I let out a small, shaky laugh, rubbing at my eyes before she could see the tears. "You know, you’re going to make me cry," I muttered, half-laughing, half-sniffling.

I laughed for minutes, my shoulders shaking, the sound coming out wrong, like I didn’t even know why I was laughing anymore. I tried to stop but I couldn’t. The more I laughed, the more it hurt. “They are not yours, Drew… no… no…” I shook my head repeatedly laughing in pain.
