I turned in every direction, but there was nothing to see, only that endless gray, curling and breathing like a living thing.
Then the world tilted.
The ground gave way. I fell, or thought I did, tumbling into blackness that had no end.
When I hit the ground, it wasn’t ground at all but water. It was shallow and still, black as ink, stretching forever. I rose slowly, gasping. My reflection rippled beneath me, faint and strange, as if I didn’t belong to it.
And then came the voice.
