She walked out carrying a massive book. I recognized what it was right away. It’s the type of book that you use for a portfolio. “You got me a new book?” “Kinda.” Penny showed me the cover. It had a Black Moon with two wolves howling. The leather was fresh as I could smell it. Alec took the cover and opened it for me.

It had to be. The cover was intricately carved with another forest scene, this one with an achingly lovely girl front and center, running along a narrow path. She was wearing a long, flowing cloak over a peasant dress and was looking back over her shoulder with an expression of mingled terror and excitement. There were no authors’ names, just a title that stood up a little taller than the rest of the carving. Rutakoppchen. "Red Riding Hood," she whispered, hearing the words in her mother’s voice. A very big thick book that was tucked away on a lower shelf caught my eye. It had elaborate catchy designs carved into its surface and its back was strange and hard—almost like stone. Even in this room of wonders it appeared antiquated enigmatic and completely out of place. I was driven by my curiosity which was always my downfall. Reaching for it I took it off the shelf. Its weight was unexpectedly greater than its appearance. It resisted my attempts to open it. Not only was it closed but it was also bound and nearly sealed. Instead of using a lock an organic substance that resembled thin hardened vines or entwined prickly twigs wrapped around the cover and held it closed.

The cherry finish caught the light in such a way that it highlighted the etched designs. I flipped the lid open to see the primary focus of the gift. The book’s rose-colored cover was embossed with silver designs. Its title ‘A Warrior’s Heart: Avalynn’s Fight for Justice’ stood out. A sword covered in flames pierced through the title. It looked really fucking cool. Ava had developed a love of reading, not that any of us were surprised about it. She certainly took after her mother in that regard. Our daughter could go through books faster than anyone that I personally knew, which was saying something.
