The weight of our situation pressed down, heavy and suffocating. It was then, amidst the debris of a collapsed building, that Kelly unearthed it – a small, tarnished silver locket. It lay half-buried in the dust, its surface scratched and worn, yet somehow managing to retain a faint, almost ethereal glow. We gathered around it, the faint glimmer a stark contrast to the surrounding darkness. Inside, nestled amongst the faded velvet lining, was a single, faded photograph.

She was glowing in that unmistakable way only pregnancy seemed to bring, her steps careful but light, her smile bright and mischievous as always. Accepting the book with both of my hands, I looked down at it with confusion. "I thought it might come in handy. Besides it's small enough to fit in to a wide pocket so you can carry it anywhere." The woman said.

She'd have been in less of a state right now if it hadn't taken her two days to work up the courage to open it. She could still feel the way her heart rate quickened as she untied the brown craft string and gently tore at the seams of the paper. I smile at her. “Go, open it.” She insists happily. “I thought about you when I saw it so I instantly bought it right away.” I started opening the paper bag and saw a notebook that seemed like a journey or something and a cute hand-knitted slipper inside. “That is a Mamentos Before Child Pregnancy Journal so you could write down everything you want to.” “Oh Gwyneth that’s so sweet of you. He looks caught for a second, and then he says, “I’ll find out. Keep looking.” I take out the rest of the yarn, and underneath, there’s a rectangular leather case, about the size of a laptop. It looks handmade, too. The stitchwork is very neat and even, but not perfectly uniform like you’d get from a machine. I unfold the case, already knowing what I’ll find, and I’m right. There are slots filled with every size needle and crochet hook you could want, as well as a pouch with a thimble, scissors, and a random assortment of safety pins, straight pins, buttons, and a few threaders for good measure.

I always stare at these pictures everyday, hoping that it would give me even just a glimpse of my life before. I spend most of my time making colorful crochet pouches. I use it as both a table and a place to hold the skeins of yarn while I crochet. Luke laughed as he watched how I arrange my materials as I work. I looked at him with slanted eyes, “Hey, don’t judge.
