The sound of my brothers and sisters being injured made my hackles rise as soon as I transformed into my fur. The dirt shifted slightly under each paw as I walked further from the house. It took everything in me not to turn back and look for Lana in the windows. I could feel her eyes on my back as I took my place and held my stance, waiting for someone to be fast enough to make it past our other wolves, but stupid enough to cross me. 'They flooded the south border. They're moving in.' My ears dropped back as I heard the first rogue rushing through the trees. They were still a decent distance out but were quickly closing in.

“We have to get out of here, now!” I tried moving, but my feet remained rooted to the ground, as if my body had a mind of its own. The forbidden woods loomed, the air thick with a dangerous chill. Shadowy creatures with razor sharp teeth and sharp claws emerged from the trees. Saliva dripped from their mouth, their gaze glowing with pure hunger for our flesh. Aurora was the first to react, with a loud howl she shifted into a wolf with light brown furs. Others followed suit, a transformation of snapping of bones and furs.

The kind used for one thing: a calling. From the north, a howl answered. Not the clean call of a Willow Creek wolf. This was ragged, hungry. A second howl joined from the west. Then a third. They were distant, but they were closing. “She’s not just looking,” Gareth said, his hand shifting subtly, claws beginning to unsheathe. “She’s calling the scattered ones. The ones who fled the chaos at the springs. She’s gathering a new hunting party.”

He threw his head back and released a sonic boom of a laugh that had me damn near jumping into Azrael’s arms. “They like the names you’ve chosen for them, she-wolf. Though, Ember insists he does not have attitude problems.” I narrowed my eyes at the horse because he definitely had attitude problems.
