You’d think more people would be hesitant to find their fated mates, considering what happened to the previous generation, but I guess the possibility of eternal love and happiness clouds peoples’ rationality. The last two months, Vinny’s pack, The Forza Nelle Tenebre, aka Forza Pack, and Dare’s pack, The Running River Pack, have taken turns hosting full moon runs. A bunch of my pack members have traveled to these events and about fifty of them found their fated mates within the other packs. Small fuckin’ world, right?

Never once did I imagine I would be standing in it, in this manner. In the middle. Alone. Shocked. Confused. “Poison?” “During the council? That is a death warrant.” The murmurs poured from all sides of me, condemnation dripping in the air silently. They only fueled my confusion. I stood there unbound, but it felt like I was chained down as every leader murmured behind the palms of their hands, loathsome stares directed at me.

Fear sharpened by the sick twist in my stomach: I had once loved this man. “I never asked for this,” I said, forcing steel into my voice. “And I won’t let you blame me for fate.” He laughed—low, humorless. “Fate? This could just be one of his stunts to gain public favour. The elders spoke in turns, offering blessings. I listened, but my mind drifted. Until Eleanor stepped forward. “My King,” she began, her voice smooth, almost sweet. “And honored members of the council.” She turned slightly, enough to include me in her line of sight. “Today is a day of Fate. A day chosen by forces greater than us.” My chest tightened. “However,” she continued gently, “one cannot help but wonder…” She paused and looked at me. “If Fate, perhaps, made a mistake.”
