A fragile, hard-won relief began to warm his frozen core. Then, the mountain groaned. It was a deep, subterranean rumble that vibrated up through the earth. They all watched, frozen, as the hidden entrance they had escaped from—and the entire network of tunnels below—collapsed in on itself with a final, grinding roar. The earth settled, leaving only a scar of freshly disturbed rock and dirt. The entrance was gone. Sealed forever. The mine was gone. The evidence was gone. The bodies of the human slaves, the silver collars, the machinery of the Duke's operation—all of it, buried under tons of rock and seawater.

It crumbles , collapsing into a pile of lifeless, brittle sand. A wave of putrid, earthy stench rolls over us. The street below… dies. Plants wither. Metal corrodes. A localized scar of utter desolation.

LYRA’S POV The noise inside the mine was enough to make my ears bleed. It wasn't just the snarling of the rogues anymore. It was the sound of the mountain itself screaming. Every time that thing...the massive, hulking beast that had been hiding in the deep shafts...slammed its fists against the ground, chunks of stone rained down on us.

"Ahh, make it stop. I'll behave. Just make it stop." Ollie started to cry again, so she held on. Riley knew Ollie, this is why she trusted him. Something or someone was controlling him. This wasn't right. She had to try and get more answers. There had to be clues or a way to gain more information. She was working in the right direction. She just needed to up her game.
