“You have big, beautiful blue eyes. You should emphasize that. Also, your expression is sort of a smile, but it doesn’t reach your eyes. When a person smiles, their cheeks are rounder up beneath your eyes. You could try changing that.” I moved the paper back over and studied it. She was right. “Thanks,” I told her. “Sure.” “Also, that’s not your nose,” Brice chimed in, even though I hadn’t asked. “You drew some sort of a snout. You have a cute little button nose.” He wasn’t even looking at me. “How do you know?” I asked, offended.

My chest tightens. Mom leans over. “Draw him a smile, sweetheart,” she says. Lila grabs a crayon. “Why do you not smile, Uncle Vor?” she asks. Her eyes big. Innocent. “You look sad.” The room quiets. Even the ocean seems to pause. I set my fork down. “I smile plenty, monster,” I say. I force a grin, wide but fake. “See? Happy.” Lila tilts her head. “Not real,” she says. “Real smiles go to your eyes.”

Outside the window rain tapped softly against the glass. Students hurried beneath umbrellas while lights slowly flickered on around campus. Jessica looked down at the drawing again. Picked up her pencil. Sophie glanced over. "What are you doing?" Jessica stared at the page quietly. Then softly said: "Adding something." "What?" Jessica looked down at the unfinished face. Slowly... Very slowly... she drew a smile. Not a huge one. Not a perfect one. Just a small one. A real one. Then she sat staring at it.

The details weren’t clear, but Nadine knew exactly who it was supposed to be. Adrian swallowed hard. “Is this… us?” Liam nodded. “I drew it after I saw you at the ice cream shop. I didn’t know who you were then, but you looked nice.” Nadine’s chest tightened. She hadn’t even known Liam had done that. Adrian smiled, though his eyes were slightly glassy. “It’s my favorite one.” Liam giggled. “I’ll draw more for you!” Adrian ruffled Liam’s hair. “I’d love that.”

Evelyn tapped the image. The picture filled the screen. Three stick figures stood beneath a bright sun drawn in uneven yellow crayon. One small figure stood in the center. Silas. On the left side of the page was a taller figure with long hair. Evelyn. On the right side was another tall figure. The man had dark hair and violet eyes colored in carefully with a purple crayon. Damian. But something about the drawing felt different from the ones Silas had made before. The two adult figures stood far apart from each other.

But they all grabbed a marker pen and started drawing anywhere they could reach. They all seemed to know what they were drawing. When they finished drawing their individual pictures, they went to a larger blank wall. Where Max drew a big circle, Eden then drew a slightly smaller circle inside of it. Before Jaxon drew some lines connecting the circles. It made it look a little like a clock. But Eden added some wavy lines at the bottom of it. When they finished, they went to a sofa, curled up with Evie and cried. I looked at their pictures. Max had drawn a man’s shaver but with small lightening bolts coming off it, Jaxon had drawn a bucket and Eden had drawn a knife.

Their smiles lighten my mood and all the weird heaviness that my chest held vanished. “Finally, I saw you smiling genuinely,” Diego smiled. “This was a long day… And we are still not done yet…” “But we have everything in control,” He smiled and kissed my head. “Dad, see I painted this.” Liam brought his drawing and for a moment we both paused. “What the… What did you draw?” I whispered. This… “Mountains. River. And then there is snow on top of the mountains.” “Oh…” Diego and I loudly said.

Maybe years. And then I see the drawings. Taped to the walls, scattered across tables, covering nearly every surface I can see. Sketches in charcoal and pencil, some detailed and finished, most of them half-done like he started and couldn’t bring himself to continue. All of them are the same person. A girl. Young, fourteen or fifteen maybe, with long dark hair and this smile that looks like it could light up an entire room. In some of the drawings she’s laughing at something off the page. In others she’s concentrating hard, her tongue stuck between her teeth the way kids do when they’re focused.

I took a look at the drawing and smile, it was a squibbly drawing of her. Blue eyes, Blond hair tied in a ponytail and a wide smile. Tho, it was the proff of a really vast artistic yet Childish cell. I saw it as something else. I saw it as her, standing right there with crayons in arms and a wide smile across her lips. I smiled slightly and carrased the picture, I know just where to put it. I turned it over and I arched an eyebrow on seeing something. “1..9..9..2?” I called out in confusion.

She makes a sassy face and I chuckle . " Well it's important for .. " I open my bag and search for my notebook that is supposed to be for study notes but is actually my boredom doodle file . " Tada ~ " I finish off as I show her my drawing of Luigini's wife naked and his name written between her legs . Since I didn't know what she looked like I decided to make her faceless , only shading to provide her a proper structure . Kayla slaps her hand against her mouth in order to stifle her laughter . Her face turns slightly red from restricting herself .
