My fingers locked onto the steering wheel.
The sobs ripped out of me, raw and uncontrollable, tearing through the quiet dusk like wounded animals. My throat seared with every cry, as though the sound itself was burning me from the inside out. My ribs clenched painfully around each desperate breath, and my heart pounded like it wanted to escape, like it wanted to fling itself from my chest just to be free of me.
I cried until my throat burned, until my chest ached so badly it felt like my heart might tear itself apart. My vision was a haze of salt and shadow, the world blurred into streaks of red and black and gold as the sun sank lower, drowning itself in the horizon.
