Runa places a finger on Freya’s forehead and a blinding white light flashes. “You are now the blood red wolf. You have the ability to heal any and all wounds, but be careful. It comes at a cost. Since you believe I am selfish let’s see if you can break the curse I have bestowed upon you. Selfishness is what got you here and selflessness can break it. This curse will pass down to your first born daughter until it is broken.” Just as quickly as she appeared, Runa disappears, with her laughter fading in the wind.

The pain slams through the bond and I redirect it before it can hit Arin fully. Into me. The first wave feels like swallowing broken glass and smoke at the same time. It burns. It claws. It digs under my ribs like it’s trying to burrow back out. “Kael,” Arin sobs. “It’s inside you.” “Yes.” My voice barely sounds human. “That’s the point.” The circle vibrates violently. The carvings on the walls blaze awake. Ancient runes flicker like they’ve been waiting centuries for this exact moment. The curse fights. It thrashes inside me, trying to twist back toward Arin, toward the bloodline it recognizes. Safe. Familiar.

"Just look at me and breathe. We can fix this." My words had the opposite effect. She looked at her arm and let out a small, choked sound. She started to shake even harder, and her eyes went wide with a frantic energy. The curse seemed to notice her fear immediately. It was like a predator sensing a weakness, and it took advantage of her unsettled state of mind. I watched in horror as the black runes on her arm began to wiggle. They moved like worms under her skin, twisting and turning vigorously as if they were searching for a way to burrow deeper into her heart.

Then the doctor ran in as we stepped back and Xavier growled as he was male, unmated and unmarked as far as we could tell. "I came as quickly as I could, alpha, what's going on?" he asks, looking at the unconscious girl in front of me. A gasp of fear and shock escapes him and he backs away. "You have to kick her out!! I cannot treat her! She's the Cursed Rogue!! She matches the description perfectly! Alpha, she cannot-" I snapped. "SILENCE!" Xavier roared. It was rare for our wolves to actually speak on their own like that without their human counterpart, but in this instance, I was right along with him. The doctor instantly closed his mouth and bowed his head in submission.
