Magic is the only reason I survived that fall. Magic is the only reason I now bear the mark of a Ruined. The inked fingers symbolize my curse. We come to the end of the path, where an old cottage loom close to a lake. I follow the strange lady inside. The interior reminds me a lot of my family's cottage back in the Red Moon Pack. The only difference is that this cottage has a lot of shelves where a good number of bizarre-looking artifacts and runes are kept on. At the back of the cottage, a space has been cleared, where chairs and tables are arranged as though it was a bar shop.

“She’s my mate.” The bond pulses, a violent echo that sears through me, through him, through the silence of every witness. Gasps ripple, wolves recoil with horror twisting their faces. Dravens shift, shock giving way to unease. Both sides look at us like we’ve spit in the face of nature itself. Kael shoves Ronan off, spitting blood from his lip. “A curse,” he hisses, voice trembling with rage. “You doom us all.” The whisper spreads like rot: curse… curse… curse.

Shadows flicker red beneath my door now, dancing like cruel spirits. “Run!” The word echoes in my skull. The door bursts inward in a spray of sparks and splintered wood. Flames roar behind a towering silhouette. A man steps through the fire. I cannot see his face — only the outline of him carved in burning light. And his eyes. They glow. Not with reflection. With power. The world fractures into red and gold. Heat devours everything. The scream tears from my throat— I wake choking on smoke that isn’t there. My room is dark. Quiet. Whole.

Like my soul knew the meaning of the words even if I didn’t understand them. The ground trembled and I flinched as the rune beneathe my feet glowed in tandem with the mark I could feel pulsing just below my collar bone. The same mark I could see glowing beneath Orion’s shirt. A mark that resembled a crescent moon. “Whatever happens,” he warned. “Don’t move, don’t speak. Don’t feel anything.” I stiffened. If moving could mess up brejaking this curse, then I would be as stoic as a statue.

Saoirse nodded, and was silent for a long moment as she studied the runes from all sides. "Well?" I asked when she still didn't say anything, just had a thoughtful look on her face. "I recognize these," she said. "Can you read them?" Iris asked excitedly. "What do they say?" "I can't read them," Saoirse replied. "I just recognize them. The pattern of the runes... They're familiar. I've seen something similar in an ancient scroll... This curse is ancient too, that much is certain." "We knew that," I said. "Can you break it or not?"

The runes, dark as obsidian, seemed to shimmer faintly under the dim light. Each symbol was jagged and angular, their edges curling inward like barbed hooks. They flowed seamlessly into one another, forming an endless chain of patterns that spiraled around his arms, coiled across his chest all the way to the soles of his feet. At the center of his broad chest, the runes converged to form the open jaws of a serpent, its fangs poised to strike. They pulsed faintly, as though imbued with a latent, otherworldly energy. I wanted to move, to pull her away from this nightmare, but something caught my eye. A mark. A rune. I lifted her mother’s hand, my stomach twisting. It was unmistakable. The Rune of Agony. An old witch’s curse designed for a painful, prolonged death. Alina’s mother had been murdered. I turned to Alina, showing her the rune. It's right there on her neck" Haru said and I turned to look at Rhea again. This time, I saw it. "How is the rune keeping them unconscious and trapped in the illusion?" I asked and Stefan turned to look at me. "It's an imprint of an incomplete blood curse" "What? What's that?" I asked.

She put the Hawthorne berry down and picked up the stake. "That one I hope is self-explanatory," Niniane said with a smirk. But Layla didn't respond. Instead, she was analyzing the runes that were carved into the wood. They were things she'd never seen in any of her studies before. "What do the runes mean?" "No one knows," Niniane said leaning over and looking the stake over. "It is in a forgotten language that the first chosen created." "The first chosen?" Layla asked. "Mmh hmm, the very first vampire," she hummed.
