By the time they broke through the tree line, the town was burning in full. Fire ran through the streets. People scattered in every direction mothers dragging children, men wielding broken tools as weapons. And in the chaos moved the rogues, wild and twisted wolves whose minds had long since rotted. Alaric was off his horse before it stopped. His boots struck the ground hard. The curse in his blood stirred, coiling deep beneath his skin. His claws slid out, dark and sharp as obsidian. The air around him shifted, thickening with power. He didn’t wait quickly He moved cutting down as many as he could quickly and swiftly.

Words come out of his mouth. The wolves born without fated mates are considered cursed and are sentenced to death by the Alpha. I heard a story a long time ago. The wolves who don't have mates have a red half-moon mark on the back of their neck. Since having a mate is a blessing, not having one is considered a curse, a bad omen. We walked out of the dungeon and he locked the door, then we went down the hall to the other side, which was more like an animal shelter, where we locked away animals that had gone berserk. “Helen’s owner had asked that she be killed to put her out of her sorrow,” Hark said as he stood in front of a cage. A white furred dog was in there– I couldn’t tell the breed, but it was huge and it kept snapping and growling at it. I nodded at Hark, waiting for how he wanted to use this dog to prove his point. He opened the food and placed it inside the cage for the dog to eat. It rushed it instantly and Hark barely saved his arm.

A sickly glow pulsed behind their irises, something unnatural, something twisted. Daisy stiffened. “Demon wolves.” My stomach dropped. I had heard of them before—wolves who had been cursed, their souls tainted by black magic, driven by something worse than hunger. But I had never faced them. I barely had time to process before one lunged. I dodged, barely avoiding the swipe of his claws as he skidded past, snarling. Another rogue launched at Daisy, but she twisted, kicking him back before raking her claws down his chest.
