Damien turned to the two when he hung up. “Your father might not have been involved in the explosion. He was held hostage and later killed by Debby and Chen.”

The silence felt heavier than any conversation. Damian stared out the window, the estate shrinking behind him until it just disappeared. It wasn’t until they were up in the tower, door closed, office quiet, that Marco finally spoke. “How is he?” “Dying.” Damian didn’t dress it up or soften the blow. No point pretending. He dropped into his chair, elbows on the armrests, pressed his fingers against his eyes for a long second. “Slowly. But dying.”

I kneel in front of Mom to see if she’s conscious, or alive though. Her injury looks very severe and critical. “They got Adrian and killed my mother,” Damian says, radiating rage and pain from his voice. Mom starts to cough, she breathes in my scent then I feel her calm down and go back to sleep. “They will pay for what they have done. Right now we need to get you two to the pack’s clinic.” I console Damian. He hits my hand off his shoulder, “I’m fine,” he says as he’s struggling to get up.

It was like a dream I would never go back to. A week after the incident, the four men including Damian was declared to be dead. The car they were riding in exploded into a ravine. Burnt bodies were found there and the group was identified. I didn't hear much of it. Tita didn't even include me in the conversation. Maybe they are thinking it will worsen my mental health.

Robert said, voice low and remorseful, “She was being honest about everything, and that was the last time I’d ever speak to her.” The room froze. “When I returned the next morning,” Robert continued, “I received news that she had passed away silently during the course of the night.” Damian’s breath hitched. “Without showing any prior signs.” The silence that followed was crushing. Damian’s face drained of color. His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. Guilt carved itself openly into his expression. His throat burned. Slowly, painfully, Damian opened his mouth. “I…” he whispered.
