Damian leaned close, examining our daughter with the same intense focus he brought to everything meaningful in his life.

"Aria," he said quietly. "Look at her eyes."
I adjusted my hold, angling her small face toward better lighting. But when she briefly opened her eyes, responding to my movement, I saw what Damian had noticed.
The eyes themselves were unremarkable. But in certain lighting, when illumination caught them precisely right, there were flecks of gold scattered through the iris.
