Frustration bubbled inside me as I clicked link after link, searching for anything that felt real. Then I found it. An article buried deep in an obscure forum, titled “The Forgotten Threat: Nightwalkers Among Us.” “Guys,” I said, my voice trembling slightly. “I think I found something.” They crowded around me as I scrolled through the page. It described creatures that thrived in darkness, their eyes pitch black, their presence marked by death and destruction. The details were sparse, but the fear in the writer’s words was palpable. “This has to be fake,” Zane said, though he didn’t sound entirely convinced.

The front destination sign was dark, nothing but a black rectangle at first. It rattled to a stop in front of me. The doors hissed and folded open on their own. Inside: darkness. No strip lighting, no driver silhouette. It's just a yawning black mouth. Every horror writer instinct I had flared red. No. This was wrong. This was too familiar. I’d written something like this, once. A short story about a bus that only appeared to people who’d crossed a line they couldn’t uncross, ferrying them to a place that wasn’t Heaven or Hell but something worse.

I turned back again and tried to shake off the feeling, but it only grew stronger with each step I took. Suddenly, I heard a blood-curdling scream right in front of me. I froze, unable to move or breathe as a ghastly shadowy apparition materialized before me. It had a pale, almost translucent body that seemed to flicker in and out of existence but it was dark , like the shade of coal. I was rubbed my eyes hard to determine if it was real or I was imagining. But the apparition let out another ear-piercing scream before disappearing into thin air, almost hitting me on my forehead as I fell back on the ground , screaming.

I scoffed and sat on the kitchen counter. "Okay but you know I never saw him showing emotions, but that day he was so afraid. Can you imagine the man who isn't even afraid of his death or anything, is afraid of losing you?" She sighed before continuing. "Everybody has a dark past here. They haven't been born as a criminal, their fate and their past forced them to be here." She looked at me as if her eyes were saying something. I didn't know if it was sadness or pain, but her sentences made me tender a bit for the criminals.

The rat turned its muzzle towards Viktor, whiskers quivering, and fixed on him a blank jaundiced eye and a glistening empty eye socket. But this was only the beginning.
