I read 'The Maze Runner' because a friend insisted, and I found the concept fascinating but the execution frustrating. The premise is solid sci-fi: a group of kids with wiped memories dropped into a giant, shifting maze. That initial mystery had me hooked; I genuinely wanted to know what the Glade was and who put them there. The pacing is relentless, which can be fun.

But the characters felt like archetypes more than people to me, especially Thomas, who fits that 'special chosen one' mold a bit too neatly. For hard sci-fi fans who crave detailed world-building and scientific plausibility, the explanations behind the maze and WICKED might feel thin or overly geared toward YA thriller conventions. It’s a page-turner, but not necessarily a thinker. I finished the book curious enough to glance at the sequel, but I wasn't rushing to buy it.
