Elara’s POV Dawn came with bad tidings. I was already packed and preparing to leave when the news came. The plague had grown resistant to Gaius' temporarily remedy. It had spread faster than anyone expected and had now reached two more packs — including Alpha Vesper’s territory. Reports spoke of entire families falling ill overnight, high fevers, dark lesions on the skin, and rapid death. The death toll was rising quickly. I had to go. Immediately. But first, there was one small thing I needed to fix.

I still recalled the smell of the healers having to drain the buboes that formed on people’s skin. The children died first. Their immune systems couldn’t keep up with the rapid spread of the plague, and they often died in convulsive fits of agony. Their screams echoed through the pack. It still gave me nightmares on occasion. Eventually, we did manage to cure the plague. A vaccine was created. But many members of the pack died before that happened. It was biological warfare, we realized. The opposing Alpha, furious that he had lost through traditional methods, committed the most egregious act by sending that “refugee” family right to our doorstep.

"Bubonic plague, also known as Black death" Alex said. "Its the deadliest pandemic recorded in human history, it once claimed over 200 million lives, it's very deadly and it can be transmitted by contact."

Every single light in the apartment had died, plunging the fortress into a pitch-black labyrinth illuminated only by the faint, chaotic sweep of flashlight beams from the living room. We didn't have time to reach the elevator or the service garage. They had the exits blocked. In a move of absolute desperation, I kicked open the hidden flush panel of a small utility closet at the very end of the hall—a space meant for nothing more than network servers and extra linens. I dragged Malakai inside, pulling the heavy, reinforced door shut until the magnetic latch clicked into place with a sickeningly quiet snap. The darkness inside the closet was absolute, suffocating, and incredibly tight.

He pleaded. "That's not how it works. Tell me what you have heard about me in the streets? What did people warn you about when it came to making deals with me?" "They said never to cross the Deadly one, to do so-" he paused, shaking his head. "To do so would be a death sentence to not only you but your family. But I didn't think I couldn't pay you back. I was one win away from getting it all back. I can get it all back." I let out a low chuckle.

He leads us to his office, motioning for Dimitri and me to take a seat while he settles on the opposite chair from us. "We will like to know about a very deadly infection that spread in the moonstone pack a while ago." Dimitri begins as soon as we settle down. Aloha Henry's face turns grim, almost fearful. "The black plaque." He says. "Is that what it is called?" I ask. Alpha Henry nods. "It is a deadly infection capacity of destroying lives in a matter of days." "How did it start?" Dimitri questions. "I can't say." Aloha Henry shakes his head. "It exploded right in front of our faces, wiping out families of wolves in a night."

I clenched my fists in frustration before sliding into one of the chairs and staring at her. Earlier, the doctor had informed me that Sylvia had caught the plague spreading through the city, known as Estrus fever and it had no cure. The doctor said it had a death poll of five thousand people in just three days of it's breakout. It was a cause for alarm and I felt fucking useless that I couldn't do anything to help Sylvia. I refused to let myself think of her death. I didn't know this woman, nor did she mean anything to me but I didn't think I would be able to move on if she died.
