Joel pulled the design draft straight out of his bag and handed it to Vivian. A smug look flashed across her face as she glanced at me. I let out a soft laugh. So whether I agreed or not, the outcome was the same. When I returned home from the hospital, I looked around at the memories I once shared with them. And I made a decision. I would erase everything related to me. Not a single trace left behind. The wedding photos on the wall, the carefully preserved family portraits—everything I once treasured—went straight into the trash.

Not only did the book contain a sketch of Nathan, but it also contained some of Crystal’s most intimate thoughts. If Nathan read them, there was no telling what he would do. Crystal knew that it had been foolish to write all of her intimate thoughts down, but journaling had always helped her think. It had been a close call, though, and as much as she hated the thought of it, she knew that it would be best if she destroyed the book. She brought it outside and threw it in the fire pit. She stood over it for a long time, but she could not bear the thought of destroying it.

I wrote a letter to you some few weeks back about terminating the contract I signed with GoodNovel company and I was sent a reply for the agreement. I signed the agreement and I want to say thank you for obliging to my request, truly. But it's been another issue trying to get my book titled ; One Thousand Years from your application. I tried deleting it but it still reads "signed" on GoodNovel application. Please, kindly, I'd truly appreciate the possibility of being able to delete my book from publicity as the reasons I wanted to terminate the contract still exist. The black ink vanished, leaving nothing but white light behind. "No! My story! My perfect ending!" the Author shrieked. He tried to write in his book with his other hand, but I grabbed his wrist. The purple fire in my veins flowed into the eraser, making it glow even brighter. I pressed the silver edge against the leather-bound book. "Delete," I hissed. The book exploded into white dust.

I slowly stood and moved toward the door. I opened it. The hallway was empty. I stepped outside. Nothing. I looked both ways. Whoever had been there was gone. I returned to the room and locked the door. My hands were no longer steady. I opened the book again. The final section was damaged. Several pages were missing. Not torn recently. They had been removed years ago. I ran my finger along the edge. Someone had deliberately taken them. I searched the drawer. Nothing. I searched beneath the desk.

Turn back. Then the understanding. The fortnight was not there. Not scribbled over. Not inked out. Not torn, either, in the way a hurried person tears, leaving a ragged shoulder of paper standing proud of the spine. Cut. Somebody had taken a blade to that book and removed the pages one at a time, close in against the binding, and had done it well enough that the book still closed flat. You had to open it wide and hold it toward the window to see the stubs at all.

"I hope these still work." The Last Editor slowly walked forward. His face remained hidden beneath the shadow of the lantern. Only his voice reached them. "Stories multiply." "Worlds multiply." "Choices multiply." "And eventually..." "...everything collapses beneath its own weight." Another drop of black ink struck the floor. A second aisle vanished. The books that had just been created from Adrian's journey faded into mist before anyone could touch them. The White Book trembled violently. Golden cracks spread across its cover. Adrian held it tightly.

It was an entire chapter. Or rather — it had been an entire chapter. In a volume of pre-covenant history, slim and old enough that the spine had partially separated from the pages, I found a chapter whose title had been carefully, deliberately removed — the top of the page cut away with something sharp, the chapter number scratched out with ink so heavy it had bled through to the page below. The text of the chapter itself was gone — not cut out but removed at the binding, the pages taken cleanly from the book, leaving only the faint ghost of them where the paper had pressed against the pages on either side for long enough to leave traces. Someone had removed this chapter.

The ending created by silly words lost its weight at this point. I hovered above the bookmark sign at the top right corner of the screen before clicking on it. The menu popped up, and I chose to delete the book from my homepage. A notification popped up at the center of the screen. [Are you sure you want to delete the book? This process is irreversible.] I clicked confirm. The progress bar completed in a flash, and the book vanished without a trace from my homepage. Ding! My phone lit up. I received a text. [Processing complete. You have received 10,000,000 dollars into your bank account for completing the S-Rank mission!]
