Fractured
He could still taste brine, sour now, fouled by corruption.
The waves thundered behind him, erratic, each one a scream of dissonance. He turned, eyes sweeping the horizon, but the sea was no comfort.
It writhed.
He could see it—vast patterns once etched into tide and current shattered, replaced by chaos.
He closed his eyes. That was worse.
Behind his lids, visions rose unbidden: great whales circling endlessly, blind and weeping; schools of fish slamming themselves against rocks in frantic confusion; the leviathans ramming trench walls, desperate to escape what could not be escaped.
