The boy looked ready to open his mouth, but the girl gave him a reproachful look, and he closed it again. Soon we arrived at a house—not quite a manor, but larger than a typical London home. A gargoyle sat atop the door, and leaned down over us as we neared. The children and I jumped. “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” said the gargoyle, its stone lips pulling back to reveal stone teeth. “Do you happen to know the password?”

I backed away, startled by the coolness under my touch, only to find that he wasn't a man at all—but a stone statue. His boulder-like features began to twitch, making an eerily cracking noise and suddenly his face contorted from that of a man to a dragon. The gargoyle snarled at me, now red-eyes beaming brightly causing my body to jolt and sending me careening to the ground.

The crimson liquid was completely absorbed into the gargoyle’s porous form, amplified by demon magic. A complex network of glowing, dark veins began to pulse violently beneath the stone surface, and the gargoyle’s heavy eyelids suddenly snapped wide open. It’s eyes were bloodshot, glowing, and completely menacing. A low, vibrating growl reverberated heavily through the mountain air, serving as both a ancient warning and a dark greeting to it’s threshold.
