Before I can even move, my front door is kicked open with a deafening crash. I freeze. Heavy footsteps. Shadows moving. Then, hands grab me. Strong, rough hands. I try to struggle, but they’re too powerful. They drag me out of my room, down the hall, into the living room. And that’s when I see him. Gideon. The leader of the Dogs of Hell. I ignored it and eased my way around a corner ready to start sprinting as soon as I spotted something worth running towards. I turned the corner and froze. In front of me stood more than a dozen female soldiers, all armed with swords and shields, and on the ground was the swollen, bloated body of a dead dog. They all glared at me (even the dead dog) and looked ready to beat the shit out of me, no questions asked.

The dogs inside were massive, and bred for violence. Their eyes glowed in the dark. Their teeth were bared. As they fought over pieces of meat on the ground. Human meat. Pieces of Sara’s mother. A leg. An arm. Parts of her torso. The dogs tore into them, growling and snapping at each other. Blood and bone crunched under their jaws. The smell was thick in the air.

His arrows hissed, each one finding a throat or an eye, but the dogs kept coming , bodies armored in spiked iron, jaws frothing with hunger. One lunged for Selena as she turned , its fangs closed around her buckler, wrenching her arm so hard she thought the bone might snap. She drove her boot into its chest, stumbled back, felt another shape crash into her side. The snow came up to meet her, stars bursting behind her eyes as she hit the ground.
