By the time we’re finished eating and everything is cleaned up, there’s a plan in place for getting us to Mountainrose then reconnected with our pack. We’re following Jack and Ivan out to the shed to get the jeep when Darby abruptly stops at the door. Immediately, Tessa nestles against her leg in a sit, lifting her chin to nose at her mistress’ hand, and almost absently, Darby’s delicate, trembling fingers stroke under the dog’s chin.

Dakota purred, her fingers tracing along his collar. Jake scoffed. "She's probably busy scrubbing the floor right now. After all, she knows there's a tiny 0.01% increase waiting." Soon, the stillness of the night was broken by the sound of tearing fabric and moans. With a deep breath, I flung the tent flap open. Moonlight spilled in, revealing two bodies entwined. Dakota had a leather collar around her neck, with her black stockings partially rolled down. All the while, Jake kept his hand clamped around her waist.

She grabbed some dog treats and approached him slowly. "Sweet little wolf, are you hungry?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. Drex, sensing her anxiety, sat perfectly still. He put on a playful expression and wagged his tail, doing his best to appear harmless. "Oh, you’re so sweet!" the woman murmured. Without further hesitation, she reached out and stroked Drex’s head. Drex closed his eyes, leaning into the warmth of her gentle touch. "Eat up, little one. If you see someone bad, just run! Don't mind me—I'm old, but you still have your whole life ahead of you," she whispered as she pulled Drex into a soft embrace.

She’s being watched. At the far end of the camp, Troy is standing near the dogs’ cages. He feels alone and lonely, dejected by Kat’s rejection. In his hands are a few biscuits and he’s blankly breaking them. One of the dogs, a medium sized black hound, nudges its cage door. It creaks open and the dog comes out of it. Troy is startled when he feels something wet touching his hand and to his surprise, it’s the dog. The dog is licking the biscuit on his hand. Troy is not an animal lover but he’s a little comforted by the dog’s presence.

What’s his name? Jack looked across at me and I probed the young man’s mind, it was flooded with memories of him romping around the fields near his parent's home with dozens of Shepherd puppies. There was no malice in him, everything he had said was true he had a real love for the breed. I delicately lifted my paw as if to shake Drew’s hand, ‘Oh my you are one well-trained boy’ He shook my pay enthusiastically and Jack hid a smile, ‘He’s awful big Sir, is he one of those dang hybrids my parents have been telling me about’

“They’re letting just anyone in these days.” I don’t flinch. “And they’re clearly still letting in the past.” Her lips twitch into a smile that doesn’t reach her eyes. “Damien always did like strays,” she purrs, brushing past me—close enough that our shoulders touch. “But don’t get too comfortable, maid. The Wolfe always comes home.” And with that, she’s gone. Clicking down the hall in stilettos that probably cost more than my entire tuition. I stand frozen.

Zara’s POV The wheels of the carriage where I sat rocked slightly as it moved forward, the clatter of potholes against the dirt road filling the silence. I sat stiffly, my hands resting on my lap, my fingers twisting together anxiously. Every breath felt heavier than usual, the weight of uncertainty pressing down on me as Alpha Cade's words replayed in my head. 'A meal for the feral wolves'

She threw herself into my lap, smelling of grass and sunshine. ‎ ‎"Mama! Did you see? I flew!" ‎ ‎"I saw," I smiled, smoothing her hair. "You're a bird." ‎ ‎"I'm a wolf!" she corrected fiercely, baring tiny, human teeth. "Grr!" ‎ ‎"Terrifying," I agreed. ‎ ‎A rustling in the bushes drew our attention. ‎ ‎A small, silver shape tumbled out of the rhododendrons. ‎ ‎It was a pup. Tiny, clumsy, and covered in soft, metallic silver fur. It tripped over its own paws and rolled onto the grass, letting out a high-pitched yip of frustration.

We wove through the tunnels, my light low as we approached the edging of firelight. Roddy stopped, turning his head to me. I crouched and scratched him. "You bargain is paid, you can go home now." He slithered forward, pressing into my hand. I have him a soft smile and another pat. "I'll be okay, but it's dangerous for baby Burhounds. Go, thank you." I stepped back to my mates, waiting until the creature finally crawled up the walls and into a crack above, its body flattening to fit.
