The car moved forward. Adrian chased for a few steps, but the bodyguards stopped him. In the rearview mirror, he stood at the street corner like a statue soaked in rain. I looked away. I felt no thrill of revenge. I felt no old love rising from the ashes. I only felt a peace that had finally landed.

Cale ate methodically, clearing his plate with efficiency. "We're safe in here," Elion said suddenly. "For now," Cale said. "No. I mean... I feel safe. With you." Cale stopped eating. He looked at Elion. "Even though you know what I am?" Cale asked. "Even though you know I'm a... a reaper?" "You're a reaper who eats chicken and forgets his middle name," Elion said. Reaper I didn't wait for Justin’s response. I didn't look back at the terrified, tear-streaked face of Mila. Reaper’s eyes softened — almost tender — and that terrified me more than anything. “She’s the end,” he said. “The end of me. The end of you. The end of all of this.” I didn’t react. I didn’t give him anything. He took another step. “Let her come,” he said. “And no one else dies tonight.” Torres cursed. “Boss—don’t listen to him—” Reaper didn’t look at him. He only looked at me. “Or,” he said softly, “you can try to fight me.”

Another reaper was already there—tall, cloaked, and walking toward the entrance with purpose. “Hey,” I called out, stepping in his path. “Who’s on your list tonight?” He glanced at me coldly. “None of your business,” he snapped. “You know the rules.” He moved past me and entered the bar. Straight into the same hallway. The same room. My pulse raced—something I hadn’t felt in years. Is this fear? “Let me take that soul for you tonight,” I offered, trying to steady my voice. He paused, amused. “You’re not thinking clearly, Cullen.”

Liam raised his saddened gaze to Saraid’s adamant stare and a small grin adorned his face as he shook his head. “Of that I have no doubt that you would try, but Reaper I fear may be too strong to ignore. He has had a millennium to sharpen his skills and I fear I may just lose you to him. All of us could lose you to him.” Saraid felt a combination of fear and anger. She was afraid of what she felt and how helpless she was when faced with Reaper, but she was angry with Liam for not trusting their relationship enough to believe that she could withstand him. It was after all her thoughts of Liam, Treasa, and the others that brought her back from Purgatory and Reapers hold.

Nothing happened, I didn’t fall, it was like it passed over me with ease. Amber frowns at me and tries again but the same thing happened. Then a see the light that belonged to Tasha, she wasn’t far away, her hands were outstretched. I had no idea what she was doing but it was working. “REAPER!” I scream out hoping that she was here. Still there was silence, but I feel my bones crack, signalling my shift. How was it possible if Reaper wasn’t here? Actually, I don’t care, I was going to tear Amber apart.
