Turning his head, he stared directly through the crowd until his eyes locked completely onto mine. "Heidi Artemis, you are the wolfless runt of this pack, and I can smell your pathetic scent from here," Derek said loudly into the microphone, making sure every single person in the clearing could hear him perfectly. "Step forward and come up to this stage right now so I can deal with you."

She managed to hop on one foot while pulling on her leggings, her mind already racing through her to-do list, how to get home and get ready and still make it there as early as possible. Derek didn't move with the same urgency. He stayed in the tangle of sheets, propping himself up on his elbows. His dark hair was a chaotic mess, and his chest was bare. He watched her for a moment—this beautiful, whirlwind of a woman who had turned his bachelor pad into a home—and something shifted in his expression. A real, deep belly laugh that made his shoulders shake. “Oh my God,” he said, turning back to me, still chuckling. “That’s Derek. Derek from the gym.” I blinked. “You know him?” “Yeah.” He wiped at his eye, grinning. “We play pickup basketball on Saturdays. He’s a personal trainer over at Elite Fitness. Does this gig every year for extra holiday cash. Apparently the tips are insane.” I stared at the stage, then back at him. He cared so much about his people but he also had people outside the pack, whom he cared about too. Derek was just 28 years old, he doesn't plan to get married until he's in his 30s.
