excited. What is wrong with me? Am I broken? The only thing my head was yelling at me to do now was run. I let out a cry and turned to flee. I got halfway and then collided with a hard surface. I fell. Hard. I started to tremble so hard, I thought I was having a seizure. That was a body. Someone was there, I could bet my life on it. "Are you scared, my love?" A deep voice said from the dark and I raised a shaky hand to my mouth.

Nico cut in, “before making such hasty decisions.” The older man paused his show of outrage for long enough to take a long, hard look at him—past the stubble and prescription glasses, and it was worth the indignity of the past half-hour to watch as his face transformed from bright red to speculation and then horrifying realization, so that by the end of it all he stood holding onto a glass door, looking thoroughly lost. “My God,” he said, humble now as he swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing with the movement. His complexion had turned considerably pale. “Mr. De Rossi?”

His wings still out, tensed, and ready, the rest of us holding our weapons. He moved so fast I didn’t even see him. Sliding past the others as fluid as water going around rocks in a stream he came for me, I felt his arm snag my waist and my feet left the Earth. I heard Devon’s shots fire and Kenneth soared into the air in pursuit. Cassi let out a scream and I heard the others calling my name as we ascended, until they were just specks. Kenneth closing in, aiming his crossbow at Shamshiel’s wings, his purple wings beating as he tried desperately to keep up, his face contorted in anguish as he realized he would not be able to help me. In the blink of an eye Shamshiel closed his wings around us

"You're here, aren't you? What's going to happen to me?" Leo stepped closer to him, cornering Archer against the table. As he lowered his eyes, meeting Archer's gentle, smiling gaze, Leo felt the burning feeling in his chest intensify. However, he refused to lose to Archer. So, he took the wine glass and finished everything, spiked wine and all, with Archer's eyes on him. "Something terrible's about to happen," Leo said. "Aren't you going to run, Archie?" Archer shoved Leo aside. Leo immediately froze in place, not daring to turn around and watch Archer leave. The drug was starting to take effect on his body, but Leo's blood had already run cold.

"You're healthy as a horse. Who is this show for? It's pathetic. Honestly, looking at you makes me sick. You're not even half the woman Lily is." A tourist standing nearby could no longer wait on the sidelines. "Hey, buddy," he called out. "Your wife looks like she's actually in pain. Maybe you should call an ambulance?" Julian frowned, annoyed by the interference. He started to look down, actually checking on me for the first time, but before his eyes could focus, Lily let out a soft, dramatic gasp behind him. "Julian... I feel so dizzy..." As she spoke, she swayed, collapsing perfectly on cue. Julian moved like lightning, catching her before she hit the ground, his eyes wide with panic.

The glass did not break when she hit it. It bent. The strong crystal dome of the Sterling Technologies atrium bent down like a clear trampoline. It took the force of Elara's three-hundred-foot fall with an elastic groan that vibrated through her teeth. For a short time she was stuck on a web of white stress fractures. She was looking through the clear floor at the ninety-story drop below. Then the roof completely failed.

The manic laugh abruptly choked off, replaced by a suffocating, violent wave of agony. Damian swung his arm with vicious, terrifying force. He hurled the crystal whiskey bottle across the room. It smashed against the edge of the marble staircase with an explosive, deafening crack. Amber liquid and razor-sharp shards rained down over the pristine white steps, bleeding into the expensive rugs. The violent expenditure of energy seemed to sever the last remaining strings holding him upright. His knees simply gave out. The invincible, untouchable Damian Cross collapsed. He fell back, landing heavily on the edge of the plush living room sofa, his broad shoulders caving inward.
